Whether due to the climate crisis, animal rights or personal matters, the demand for vegan products is growing. Everyone fromKFC toCosta have released their new vegan treats to celebrate (exactly what we like to see!).
With a 350% increase in the number of self-described vegans in the UK alone since 2008, according toCNN, plant-based eating is becoming the norm, and Veganuary is providing an added boost.
Veganuary is a non-profit organisation that aims to increase the number of people following a vegan diet by dedicating their January to eating plant-based. The 2019 campaign saw more than a quarter of a million people pledge to stick to a vegan diet, and 500+ brands got involved. If you have been giving the challenge a go yourself know that Ohana is 100% behind you.
This month the news has been rife with talk of the devastating Australian bushfires, with both human and animal lives lost as a result. This year’s fires are unprecedented, and there is no denying the climate is changing.
If you feel as helpless as the rest of the world and wonder what you can do besides donate, a vegan diet is a significant way to contribute. Consumer purchasing power has the ability to influence the environment.
A study from the University of Oxford has shown that if humanity switched to a vegan diet we could see a 49% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from food production, a 76% reduction in land used for food production, and a 19% reduction in freshwater withdrawals.
Your consumption matters, and one person’s one mealdoes make a difference. Changing the way you eat is a great first step. The added bonus? There are a ton of skin benefits that come with a vegan diet.
If clean, clear skin is on your 2020 list, then Veganuary is for you. Your skin is thirsty for nourishing fruits and veggies to help maintain a radiant complexion. Foods like chia seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts are rich in omega 3 (these toppings are great to add to your porridge or smoothies in the morning if you want to reduce acne). Leafy greens like broccoli and kale are rich in vitamin C and canhelp reduce the appearance of pigmentation. Goodbye under-eye circles!
Here are more plant-based foods to consider:
Feed your skin the way you feed your body because food choices can impact your complexion in just a matter of days and weeks. If you’re already eating a vegan diet, hop on board the plant-based skincare train and take Veganuary to the next level.
Most skincare products aren’t vegan friendly. Many contain ingredients like beeswax, lanolin from sheep wool, carmine from insects, uric acid from cows, and many, many more. You can dive deep with this full outline of animal-derived products on the PETA website.
Plant-based skincare products, like the Ohana range, do not contain any animal ingredients or by-products. By saying yes to protecting the environment, and no to animal derivatives and hormones that irritate the skin, you are making a big difference. Our natural ingredients replace animal derivatives and synthetic chemicals, and as a result, boost the level of skin-loving antioxidants that bring the healthy glow we all know and love.
More brands are beginning to introduce vegan products, and I believe it’s the beginning of a much-needed shift into plant-based living. When buying vegan products, I recommend doing some research and finding brands that you can trust.
Just because a product uses vegan ingredients does not mean that their operations, or even company morals, are entirely vegan. Find brands whose core ethos revolves around being vegan, plant-based or sustainable. Ohana is committed to plant-based, functional, CBD skincare. Our ingredients stay natural from seed to sale, which means Ohana prioritises generating a positive impact from the ground up.
